Noah Wagner (Corpus Christi, TX, Veterans Memorial HS) netted a 92nd minute overtime goal to break a scoreless gridlock and give LSUE a 1-0 victory over Mississippi Gulf Coast on Saturday at Bary Thrash Field. It was the Bengals' (2-0) first overtime victory in the program's two-year history.
"If you want to be successful later in the season, you have to play in these types of games," LSUE men's soccer head coach Josh McReynolds said. "Our guys battled a good side and came out with a road win they should be proud of."
Wagner snuck in behind the MGCCC defense on a
Nicolai Small (Harbour View, Jamaica, Camperdown HS) free kick to net his fourth goal of the young season. The free kick was set up about 30 yards from net after
Taylor Wilson (Carencro, LA, Carencro HS) drew a foul while working on a pair of Bulldog defenders.
Bengals goalkeeper
Christian Carrillo (Prairieville, LA, Dutchtown HS) picked up his second straight shutout to keep LSUE in the defensive battle. Carrillo came off his line in the 72nd minute on a defensive breakdown and forced a wide open Gulf Coast defender to chip his attempt wide in the Bulldogs' best offensive opportunity.
Carrillo logged five saves in the clean sheet, including four in the second half.
LSUE had several goal scoring chances but could not sneak one past MGCCC goalkeeper Isaiah Gore in regulation. The Bengals had a point-blank range shot in the 78th minute shoved away and two other close opportunities in the first half.
The Bengals logged 13 shots including eight on frame including a team-high five attempts by
Angelo Fabricio (Jundiai, Brazil, St. Amant HS (LA)).
The Bengals host Pearl River on Wednesday, August 28 as part of the official ribbon cutting ceremony of the Bengal Soccer Complex. Game time is set for 6:30PM with festivities taking place just before opening kick.
