EUNICE, La. – No. 5 LSU Eunice used a set piece and sterling defense to take down No. 3 Tyler JC 1-0 on Tuesday at the Bengal Soccer Complex. In what is becoming a budding rivalry with the junior college titan TJC, LSU Eunice (2-0-0) has won both regular season meetings with the Apaches.
The Bengals were able to get the lone goal of the game in the 37th minute off a corner kick.
Fernando Fuentes (Gretna, LA, L.W. Higgins HS) sent a high curling ball towards the front of the net, connecting with
Euwin Stevens (Cape Town, South Africa, Kasselsvlei Senior Secondary) towards the back post who buried it past the TJC goalkeeper.
LSUE would have a near miss in a similar set piece a few minutes later as Stevens' header attempt was kicked loose right near the goal line as
Taylor Wilson (Carencro, LA, Carencro HS) tried to stuff home the rebound before the Apaches were able to scoop it up.
Jose Escobar (Fort Pierce, FL, Fort Pierce Central HS) also had two shots on goal in the first half as the Bengals held the advantage in the shooting department at half.
The Apaches would do everything they could to net the equalizer, putting up six shots with three being on frame.
Vinicius Cadengue (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Instituto Federal de Brasilia) tallied his first shutout with the Bengals as the sophomore grabbed five saves in the victory.
LSUE will continue its first week of the season home stand on Friday as the Bengals welcome Paris JC to town for a 6:30PM first kick.
