EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice men's soccer's offense struggled to find the back of the net as Tyler JC captured the Gulf South District Championship 2-0 on Tuesday at the Bengal Soccer Complex. It was the Bengals' (10-3-1) first home loss of the season.
LSUE saw several golden opportunities fly by the wayside. The Bengals had three early chances sail wide as a
Fernando Fuentes (Gretna, LA, L.W. Higgins HS) long range shot, inside flick by
Emilio Segovia Gaytan (Mexico City, Mexico, Colegio Olinca) and a corner kick header from
Euwin Stevens (Cape Town, South Africa, Kasselsvlei Senior Secondary) all just missed the mark.
The Apaches, however, would cash in on its lone chance in the first half.
Vinicius Cadengue (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Instituto Federal de Brasilia) pushed out a 36th minute cross but a loose ball in front of net was stuffed home by TJC to take a 1-0 halftime lead.
Tyler JC added to its lead in the 60th minute with a long-range bomb that would connect in the upper 90.
Despite the two goal hole, LSUE still had its chances. The Bengals would miss on a late penalty kick and still outshoot TJC 7-3 in shots on goal.
LSUE now awaits its postseason fate with the unveiling of the 2021 NJCAA Division I National Tournament field. The Bengals, currently ranked sixth in the most recent NJCAA Men's Soccer polls, are in contention for one of four at-large berths for the 12-team National Tournament. The field will be announced on Friday.
