EUNICE, La. – An eight-minute flurry turned a close game into a runaway shutout as LSU Eunice men's soccer took down Northeast Texas 4-0 on Friday at the Bengal Soccer Complex. The fifth-ranked Bengals (8-1-1) returned home in style in its first game on its field since April 9.
It was LSUE's fifth shutout of the season and third in its last four matches.
While the defense did the dirty work to secure the clean sheet, the defensive half would also put LSUE on the scoreboard first.
Obeng Tabi (Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Evangeline HS) netted his first goal with the Bengals, taking a deflected
Fernando Fuentes (Gretna, LA, L.W. Higgins HS) cross down the left alley and tucking in past the NTCC goalkeeper in the 23rd minute.
LSUE would take the one goal advantage until midway through the second half when the Bengals caught fire.
Jose Escobar (Fort Pierce, FL, Fort Pierce Central HS) lit the fuse, scoring a pair of goals three minutes apart. The freshmen ran under a Fuentes delivery, scoring after his low shot skimmed the defender's foot. His second goal was masterful, evading four Northeast defenders before tucking it neatly in the back corner.
Fuentes would add the exclamation point in the 74th minute, drawing a foul in the penalty area and calmly placing it to the right side of the goal.
Vinicius Cadengue (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Instituto Federal de Brasilia) garnered the clean sheet, facing one dangerous set piece from the Eagles in the second half.
LSU Eunice returns home Sunday to face Blinn College.
