Late Goal Lifts Bengals To Dramatic Home Win

EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice Women's Soccer showed its resolve on Saturday, overcoming an early hole and netting a game winning goal in the final five minutes to secure a 3-2 win over Blinn College on Saturday at the Bengal Soccer Complex.  LSU Eunice (6-2-4) continued its strong play at the midway point of the season, earning its fourth straight decision, going 3-0-1 in that span.

Madison Paujaud (Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada, High Mowing Waldorf School) flicked in the game winner in the 85th minute, crashing into the box to corral a headed ball by Lily Whitefoot (Wrexham, Wales, Darland HS) on the top of the 18-yard box.  Luna Kristiina Kullas (Copenhagen, Denmark, Gefion Gymnasium) set up the play, crossing into the danger area for Whitefoot before the opportunistic run by Paujaud.

It seemed that the Bengals would have to settle for a draw after both sides entered gridlock for much of the second half.  LSUE broke a 1-1 tie in the 53rd minute as Kyleigh Chavis (Fulshear, TX, Jordan HS) ran under a bouncing free kick from midfield by Arndís Dóra Ólafsdóttir (Hafnarfjörður, Iceland, Fjölbrautaskólinn í Garðabæ) for her first collegiate goal.  Olafsdottir's kick bounced in the middle of a scrum inside the 18-yard box, while Chavis motored from the outside to head the ball on the volley.

The lead was shortlived as the Buccaneers responded just two minutes later to even things back up, setting up LSUE's dramatic go-ahead goal.

The two teams would each scratch a goal in the first half, Blinn striking first in the 12th minute with a breakaway off a defensive breakdown. Anllely Fuentes Acosta (Ocaña-Norte de Santander, Colombia, Francisco Fernandez de Contreras) helped LSUE get back into the game, using a hand ball in the Bengals' offensive end to convert a penalty kick in the 36th minute.

Catherine Beckman (Walker, LA, Walker HS) snagged nine saves in the win, going the distance in net for the Bengals in the victory.

LSUE is back at home on Tuesday, October 7 for a home doubleheader against Angelina College.  The action from the Bengal Soccer Complex begins at 5:00PM.
