Softball Sweeps Trio At Wildcat Invitational

POPLARVILLE, Ms. – LSU Eunice took care of three Mississippi schools with a clean sweep in the Wildcat Invitational.  The tournament was cut a day short due to expected inclement weather in the Gulf Coast region.
 
No. 1 LSUE (8-7) edged No. 14 Mississippi Gulf Coast, 4-3, before shutting out East Mississippi 8-0.  The Bengals closed out the tournament against host Pearl River, beating the Wildcats 9-6.

The Bengals will hit the road again next weekend for the Sun Chief Classic. 
 
GAME ONE
 
LSU Eunice bounced back to snap a three game skid with a complete game in all facets in a 4-3 win over No. 14 Mississippi Gulf Coast. 
 
The Bengals pounced on the Bulldogs for two runs in the first inning thanks to RBIs from Ally Howard and McKenzie King.  MGCCC clawed two runs in the second to tie the game in the second inning.
After a Haley Godeaux sacrifice fly to give LSUE the lead again, Madison Monson tattooed a solo home run in the fifth to make it a 4-2 Bengals advantage.
 
Monson went 3-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored to pace the LSUE offense that had eight hits on the game.
 
Mississippi Gulf Coast plated another run in the fifth but would not have another base runner advance past first base in the final two frames.
 
Heather Zumo improved to 5-2 on the campaign after her third complete game of the season.  The freshman stuck out seven Bulldogs and allowing three runs, one earned, on eight hits.
 
GAME TWO
 
The Bengals use a four home run barrage and a complete game effort from Kaeleigh Crutchfield in an 8-0 win over East Mississippi.
 
LSU Eunice crushed a pair of homers in the first inning with Madison Monson hammering a solo long ball to center and a two-run blast from Emily Henderson to give the Bengals an early 3-0 edge.
 
Kelci Bodin added her first home run of the season an inning later with a deep drive to left field.
 
East Mississippi threatened with two runners in scoring position in both the first and third inning but Crutchfield was able to squash the threat with a ground out and fly out respectively.
 
Laykn Wales padded the Bengals lead to 6-0 in the fifth with a two-out two-RBI single.  The tag team of Monson struck again in the sixth with Monson's second home run of the game and a RBI double by Henderson.
 
Crutchfield (2-1) went the distance for the second time this season, scattering six hits and two walks while striking out a pair.
 
GAME THREE
LSU Eunice used a five-run fifth inning to help down Pearl River in a late-night shootout, 9-6.  The Bengals pounded 13 hits with three players enjoying multi-hit games.
 
LSUE found itself in an early 1-0 hole but climbed out quickly.  After Pearl River plated a run in the first inning, the Bengals responded with Mima Doucet's RBI double to tie the game 1-1.  Kelci Bodin pushed LSUE ahead with an RBI single to right scoring Doucet. 
 
Pearl River's Ilyssa Easton tied the game up for the final time with a RBI to left an inning later.
 
Mima Doucet helped LSU Eunice answer right back with a two-run home to center field.  The Bengals never trailed for the remainder of the game. 
 
LSUE broke through for a five-run frame after loading the bases off a single, double and intentional walk.  After Emily Henderson scored on a passed ball, Bodin struck again with a RBI single up the middle to plate Doucet.  LSUE crossed two more after a Wildcat error at third base on Haley Godeaux's grounder.  Ally Howard ended the scoring with a sacrifice fly to center field to make it a 9-2 LSUE advantage.
 
The Bengals offense was led by Mima Doucet with a 2-for-3 night driving in three runs and scoring three runs.
 
PRCC scored four of its own in the bottom half of the inning.  Heidi Zumo came in relief of Jeanne Trahan to give up three consecutive singles to load the bases.  A Wildcat double and single helped cut the Bengal lead to 9-6.
 
Heather Zumo took over in the fifth and helped shut down the Pearl River offense.  Zumo picked up her sixth win of the season after three innings of scoreless relief allowing just one hit with three strikeouts.
