No. 1 LSUE Heads To Pearl River For Region 23 Tournament

EUNICE, La. –  LSU Eunice begins the postseason with a Region 23 appearance on Wednesday, May 15 against host Pearl River.  The Region 23 Tournament is a four-team, double elimination tournament set for May 15-17 in Poplarville, Miss.

The two teams to make it to the Region 23 Championship game will earn a berth in next week's NJCAA Division II National Tournament in Clinton, Miss.  The tournament field is rounded out by Itawamba and Copiah-Lincoln, who are scheduled to meet at 4:00PM in the other opening round game.

LSU Eunice enters the postseason with a 48-6 record and currently on a nine-game win streak.

The Bengals meet the Wildcats in Poplarville, Miss. for the second time this season.  LSUE took down PRCC, 17-9, during the Wildcat Invitational on February 8.  The Bengals own a 34-2 advantage in the all-time series, including a current 20-game win streak against Pearl River.

The Wildcats (27-20) earned their first ever Region 23 Tournament host after an impressive performance at the MACJC State Tournament.  Pearl River shocked defending NJCAA Division II National Champion Jones, 8-2, in the opening round of the tournament on the way to making a final's appearance.  The Wildcats are one of the hottest teams in the region, having won six of their last seven games.

It will be Pearl River's first ever time hosting the Region 23 Tournament.

The sophomore duo of Elizabeth Taggard and Mary Grace Turner lead a potent PRCC offense.  Taggard has a team's best 53 RBIs and .465 batting average, while Turner's 18 home runs are tied for fifth national in NJCAA Division II.  Grace Stringer is Pearl River's top pitcher with the freshman posting a 13-4 record and 2.30 earned run average.

LSU Eunice rides the dynamic duo in the circle of Heather Zumo (Baton Rouge, LA, Central HS) and Jensen Howell (Alexandria, LA, Holy Savior Menard HS).  The pair pace the Bengals' 1.96 team ERA, ranked fourth nationally.  Zumo sports a 17-2 record with a 2.92 ERA, while Howell comes into the postseason with a 18-3 record and 1.44 ERA.

Sara Tate (Bayou Chicot, LA, Pine Prairie HS) propels the Bengals' offense with a .375 average and leads the team in hits, runs and stolen bases.

The Bayou Sports Network will broadcast all of LSUE's Region 23 games with a simulcast on Pearl River's web stream at PRCCMedia.com.
