Box Score 2 LUFKIN, Tx. – LSU Eunice Softball secured a mid-week sweep of Angelina College on Wednesday to close out the regular season at Lady Roadrunner Field. The Bengals (39-18) seem to have hit their stride as they make their way to the postseason, winners in 11 of their last 13 games.
Chloe Bennett (Rosepine, LA, Rosepine HS) helped guide LSUE to the opening win over the Roadrunners with a 1-0 complete game shutout. The Bengals would then use a six-run frame to help catapult themselves past Angelina 7-6 in the finale.
LSUE turns its attention to the Region 23 Tournament, beginning Tuesday, May 9 at Jones College. The top two teams from the 10-team double elimination tournament will advance to the NJCAA National Tournament in South Carolina later this month.
Game 1 vs. Angelina College – W, 1-0
LSU Eunice got a small dose of playoff softball as the Bengals held on for a 1-0 win over Angelina College. The two teams combined for just five hits in the pitching duel.
Chloe Bennett continued her late season dominance, pitching her 15th complete game of the season. Bennett would give up just two hits and a walk while striking out four batters. She would sit down the side in order four separate times while allowing just one batter to reach scoring position.
It wasn't an easy game offensively for the Bengals either, as LSUE was held in check to just three hits. The Bengals would make them count, however, as a one out single by
Katie Salling (Baton Rouge, LA, Parkview Baptist HS) would help produce the winning run as
Gabrielle Huetter (Magnolia, TX, Magnolia HS) laced a two-out RBI single to bring home Salling.
A lead off double from
Abby Touchet (Shreveport, LA, C.E. Byrd HS) to begin the seventh inning was the other hit of the contest for LSU Eunice.
Game 2 vs. Angelina College – W, 7-6
A big inning helped LSUE push past Angelina 7-6 and secure the road doubleheader sweep. LSUE capitalized on five Roadrunner errors as the Bengals held off a late Angelina charge.
LSUE found itself in a 4-1 hole before lighting up a six spot in the fourth inning.
Kaitlyn Savant (Livingston, LA, Doyle HS) helped bring across the first run off a bunt error from Angelina, followed by a sacrifice bunt RI by
Sara Roussel (Luling, LA, Hahnville HS). Another error helped score the game tying run before Abby Touchet produced a towering three-run home run to go ahead 7-4.
The Bengals weren't out of the woods just yet as Angelina knocked two solo home runs in the sixth to get within a run and then left the bases loaded in the seventh.
Touchet produced the other LSUE run in the top of the third inning with a RBI single. The sophomore led LSUE with a 3-for-4 game, driving in four RBIs and scoring once.
Landri Campbell (Olla, LA, LaSalle HS) picked up the win after tossing four relief innings, scattering two earned runs off four hits and two walks. Campbell would strike out three batters on the game.
