ATLANTA, Ga. - LSU Eunice Women's Soccer split its two games in Atlanta over the weekend as the Bengals wrapped up the opening week of the 2023 regular season. The Bengals (1-2) opened the start of a five-game road swing as LSUE does not return to Eunice until September 17.
LSU Eunice started the weekend in style, grabbing a 3-1 victory over USC Lancaster at Silverbacks Park in Atlanta. The Bengals left town with a heartbreaker, as Spartanburg Methodist scored a go-ahead winner with 30 seconds left in a 2-1 decision.
The Bengals return to action on Tuesday, September 5 as LSUE ventures west for the start of a home-and-home with Cisco College.
Friday, August 25 vs. USC Lancaster – W, 3-1
LSU Eunice raced out a quick lead and never looked back, taking down USC Lancaster 3-1 on Friday to begin the Bengals' weekend in Atlanta.
A trio of sophomores got in the scoring act started by
Gisell Lupita Jimenez Rodriguez (Cali, Colombia, Colegio Santa Isabel de Hungria). The midfielder forced a turnover in the 14th minute near the 18-yard box, turned and rifled a long shot that was mishandled by the Lancer goalkeeper.
Sydney Reed (Lubbock, TX, Coronado HS) added another goal midway through the half, rushing the goal after a long shot bounced of the USC Lancaster goalkeeper, tapping it past a defender in the 27th minute to make it 2-0 LSU Eunice going into intermission.
Sadie Bourgeois (Saint Amant, LA, Saint Amant HS) added the third goal in the 60th minute, knifing through the Lancers defense down the left sideline before cutting towards the middle and launching a 30-yard missile that tucked in the upper corner.
USC Lancaster would add their only goal of the game a few minutes later.
Hannah May (Gonzales, LA, East Ascension HS) earned the win in net, going the distance while logging a pair of saves. LSUE fired 19 shots on goal in the early morning game.
Saturday, August 26 vs. Spartanburg Methodist – L, 1-2
The Bengals suffered a late heartbreaker as a late goal dealt LSUE a 2-1 setback to Spartanburg Methodist to close out the weekend.
Sadie Bourgeois gave the Bengals some hope late, connecting on an 80th minute equalizer after the Pioneers took the lead in the first half. It was short lived, however, as Spartanburg Methodist would strike again with just 30 second remaining in regulation to steal it away from LSUE.
The Bengals would outshoot Spartanburg Methodist 13-6 on frame as
Anais Coyne (Mansfield, TX, Mansfield Legacy HS) would tally four saves.
