ENID, Oklahoma – It was certainly a trick-or-treat afternoon on Halloween for the LSU Eunice Women's Soccer team as the Bengals enjoyed the sweet taste of victory in the South District Tournament after penalty kick win over Eastern Oklahoma State College on Thursday. LSUE (9-3-1) advances to play two-seed Rose State in the semifinals at 3:00PM on Friday.
Eastern Oklahoma seemed to have put a spell on the goal as LSU Eunice would control for much of the contest, deploying a steady barrage of shots on the Mountaineer goalkeeper but would find either the post or the goalkeeper's mitts. LSU Eunice would finally break that curse in the 48th minute.
Jimena Montoya Casillas (Cuernavaca Morelos, Mexico, Colegio Miraflores Cuernavaca) linked up with
Gabby Stone (Sydney, Australia, Moriah College) inside the box as she eluded a few defenders before connecting on her team's best 11th goal of the season to give the Bengals a momentary lead.
EOSC knotted it up less than ten minutes later as a clearance attempt ricocheted right back to the Mountaineer attacker, beating a charging
Anais Coyne (Mansfield, TX, Mansfield Legacy HS) with a low dribbler.
The Bengals had several offensive opportunities down the stretch, many that would clang off the post, down the stretch in the second half and in both overtimes.
Coyne performed brilliantly in the little duress she faced on the afternoon, collecting four saves. The Bengals brought in
Hannah May (Gonzales, LA, East Ascension HS) in net late in the second overtime for the presumptive penalty kick shootout, similar to what LSUE did in last year's quarterfinal penalty kick win.
May would halt the final two offerings by the Mountaineers to put LSUE in a position to take the best-of-five shootout. After being stopped on LSUE's first attempt, the Bengals would convert on their final four penalty kicks with
Anllely Fuentes (Ocaña-Norte de Santander, Colombia, Francisco Fernandez de Contreras) sending her team into a celebration after punching in the game winner.
The Bengals advance to the South District semifinals for a second consecutive season. A win would push LSUE into Sunday's championship game for both the District title and an automatic berth into the NJCAA Division I Women's Soccer National Tournament.
The semifinal matchup will be livestreamed by Eastern Oklahoma State's Mountaineer TV. A link can be found on www.lsuebengals.net.
