LSUE Softball Finishes Weekend Sweep of National Park

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice Softball enjoyed a perfect weekend at home as the Bengals swept National Park on Saturday to take all four games in their weekend series.  The Bengals (10-4) have made the most of their home heavy start to the season, taking 10 of the first 12 games at Lady Bengal Field.

LSU Eunice held on for a 3-2 opening win on Saturday, followed by a 11-3 victory in run-rule fashion.  Kate Rills (Gonzales, LA, East Ascension HS) led the way offensively, collecting five hits over the two games and driving in five RBIs with one run scored.

The Bengals will spend the upcoming week on the road as LSUE makes two trips away from the Cajun Prairie.  LSUE heads to Mississippi on Wednesday to battle Jones College and Shelton State and then will venture west for a Saturday twin bill at Lamar State College in Port Arthur, Texas.

Game 1 vs. National Park College- W, 3-2
LSU Eunice used early offense and strong pitching to secure a 3-2 win to open the Saturday doubleheader against National Park College.

Kate Rills shouldered the load offensive, collecting three of the team's eight hits.  Rills doubled home two runs in the third to give LSUE a 3-1 lead which it would hold for the remainder of the game.  Sina Ballew (Pineville, LA, Buckeye HS) singled home the first run of the game an inning early before the Nighthawks knotted it up in the top of the third.

The combination of Cate Nettles (Slidell, LA, Slidell HS) and Reagan Rios (Longview, TX, Longview HS) were able to ward off National Park and hold on for the tight win.  Nettles picked up her first collegiate win, going 4.1 innings while scattering one run off five hits and a walk.  Rios was credited the save after tossing 2.2 innings of hitless relief.

The Nighthawks would throw a late scare into the Bengals, scoring a run in the seventh before Rios slammed the door closed to preserve the victory.

Game 2 vs. National Park College – W, 11-3 (Five Innings)
LSU Eunice struck early and often as the Bengals closed out the weekend in style with an 11-3 win over National Park in run rule fashion.

The Bengals responded to an early 2-0 hole in impressive fashion, plating seven unanswered runs including a four run first inning.  Reagan Duty (Mont Belvieu, TX, Barbers Hill HS) started the scoring with an RBI single, followed by a two-run single by Kate Rills.  McKenna Howell's (Pollock, LA, Grant HS) sacrifice fly plated the final run of the first.

Rills would add her third RBI in the second inning before a Rylie Tate (Columbia, LA, Caldwell Parish HS) RBI double and fielder's choice allowed LSUE to push out to an 8-2 lead after three innings.  After the Nighthawks scored a run in the fifth, the Bengals induced the mercy rule with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Sara Roussel (Luling, LA, Hahnville HS) capped off a five-hit day with a RBI single to begin the scoring, followed by a Reagan Duty sacrifice fly.  Rills laced a hot shot to the pitcher, who committed one of National Park's four errors, allowing Roussel to score the game ending run.

Rills, Roussel and Kamryn Howard (Iowa, LA, Iowa HS) each enjoyed a multi-hit game, part of LSUE's 10-hit outing.

Kaylee Chandler (Watson, LA, Live Oak HS) logged her first complete game to pick up the win.  The freshman gave up three unearned runs off five hits while not issuing a free pass.  Chandler would strike out three batters in the five inning game.
