MILLBROOK, Ala. – LSU Eunice Women's Soccer used an early goal and stout defense to upend the number two nationally ranked team in the nation, Eastern Florida State, 3-1 on Saturday. The Bengals (6-1) traveled to Millbrook, Alabama for the neutral site game with the Titans.
The victory is the highest ranked team LSU Eunice has defeated and is the second top-five NJCAA Division I ranked win in program history.
The Bengals thrived on set pieces, scoring all three of their goals from either a corner or free kick. LSUE set the tone very early, getting a ninth minute tally from a
Nova Eskelinen (Burträsk, Sweden, Kanalskolan Skellefteå) corner kick. The ball was misplayed by the Titan goalkeeper and
Gabby Stone (Sydney, Australia, Moriah College) made her pay with an easy header for her team's best ninth goal of the year.
LSUE would hold off the Titans on the defensive end for much of the game, clinching the one-goal lead.
Anais Coyne (Mansfield, TX, Mansfield Legacy HS) went the distance in net, making seven saves.
It was not until the final 15 minutes of the match that the Bengals could finally put away Eastern Florida. LSUE would net two goals in a span of five minutes to take a commanding 3-0 advantage.
Salomé Deneubourg (Chalo-Saint-Mars, France, Jean Pierre Timbaud HS) connected mid-air with another beautiful service from the corner by Eskelinen, taking it mid-box and shoving to the far post.
The icing on the cake came after Deneubourg's free kick attempt was blocked away on the far post but was saved by a charging
Jimena Montoya Casillas (Cuernavaca Morelos, Mexico, Colegio Miraflores Cuernavaca) with a swift rebound on an open net.
Eastern Florida would break up the clean sheet with an 83rd minute goal.
LSUE returns to action on Friday, September 27 with a road date at Angelina College.
