COLUMBUS, Georgia – In a battle to the end, Labette Community College scored two runs in the top of the seventh to grab a 3-1 win over No. 2 LSU Eunice Saturday in the NFCA Lead-off Classic.
The Lady Cardinals (6-12) scored first in the bottom of the second when Alyssa Harris reached on an error and crossed home plate on a hit by Whitney Way.
That lead remained until the bottom of the sixth inning when LSUE (30-8) tied the game as
Jordan Bishop (Newton County HS) reached on an error and pinch runner
Sierra Gasca (West Ouachita HS) scored on a RBI single by
Rae'Shaun Malancon (Ascension Catholic HS).
Labette answered with two runs in the top of the seventh to seal the win, begun when Kassidy Smith singled and scored when Laura Pineda reached on a fielder's choice.
The Lady Cardinals pushed ahead 3-1 when Mikayla Mahlo singled, later scored third and scored on a Lady Bengal error.
LSUE threatened in the bottom of the frame when
Mima Doucet (Notre Dame HS) walked but she was left stranded.
Elizabeth Fontenot (Port Barre HS) suffered the loss as she struck out one and allowed one earned run on six hits over six innings.
The Lady Bengals were limited to six hits and left six runners on base as Malancon recorded the only LSUE RBI in the game.
LSUE concludes the Classic at 10:30 a.m. Sunday against John Wood Community College.
