Sophomore Day Sweep of BRCC

EUNICE -- In their final doubleheader of the regular season, the LSU Eunice Lady Bengals swept Baton Rouge Community College here Sunday 5-2, 8-5 as the Bengals honored their sophomores.

The Lady Bengals end their regular season play 46-10 and will head to the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament in Ellisville, Miss. next week.  Jones County Community College will host the tournament, and is currently ranked first in the nation in the latest NJCAA Division II poll.  LSUE is ranked fourth.  The tournament champion and tournament runner-up advance to the Division II National Tournament in Clinton, Miss.

Both Jones and LSUE advanced last year and battled each other for the National Title.  The Lady Bengals won their fourth title last year, after winning in 2011, 2013, and 2014.

Game 1, LSUE 5, BRCC 2
Molly Wilson's two-run home run in the second inning helped LSUE jump out to an early lead.  Already up 2-0 after Jeannemarie Angelle (Cecilia HS) doubled in the first inning driving in Wilson (Castor HS) and Rebecca Skains (West Ouachita HS), Wilson's home run in the second gave the ladies some breathing room.

Baton Rouge rallied in the fourth picking up two runs to close to within three runs off a pair of line drives.

Wilson scored again when Jordan Bishop (Newton County HS) singled to left field.

Abigail Leonards (Iota HS) earned the win for LSU Eunice. She went seven innings, giving up two runs, four hits, striking out five, and walking one.

Wilson finished game one 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs.  Angelle was 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs.  Savannah Lejeune (Catholic of Pointe Coupe HS) was 1-for-3 with one run scored.

Game 2: LSUE 8, BRCC 5
Baton Rouge scored early in the first inning off a Wilson error, but LSUE answered quickly when Wilson tied the game with a run as Bishop hit a standup double to center field.  Mima Doucet (Notre Dame HS) followed with an off-the-wall double that drove in Bishop and Angelle.  And the runs kept coming in the first as BRCC dropped a Maleah Saucedo (Orangefield HS) hit and allowed Doucet to score.

Then the momentum shifted in a top of the fourth inning in favor of the Lady Bear.  Baton Rouge scored a runner in the fourth when Lakyn Wales (Zachary HS) overthrew third base after a fielder's choice throw by Elizabeth Fontenot (Port Barre HS) to home.  The Lady Bears pulled within one run when Baton Rouge's Liz Davis singled and drove in another run.

Michala Huges gave Baton Rouge the lead with a two-run single in the top of the fifth inning.

Then just like turning on a switch, the Bengals came to life and exploded for four runs to seal the victory.  Angelle tied up the game off a sacrifice bunt by Doucet and a pair of errors by Baton Rouge, Heach Coach Andy Lee called for the suicide squeeze and the Lady Bengals executed it perfectly, allowing Doucet to score.  Bobbi Smith (West Ouachita HS) singled and drove in Mary Guillory (St. Louis Catholic HS) who was pinch running for Saucedo. Smith scored on a sacrifice fly by Molly Wilson.

Hannah Vidallier (North Vermillion HS) picked up the win on the mound for LSUE and Leonards is credited with the save.
