Box Score POPLARVILLE, MS. -- In the 1970s a common Saturday morning cartoon show, Schoolhouse Rock!, did their first song and cartoon. It was "Three is a Magic Number." In the 1990s, Blind Melon did a remake of the song, and in 2017, LSUE's Bobbi Smith, Rebecca Skains and Darby Bishop put their spin on the song by hitting back-to-back-to-back home runs to defeat Calhoun College 8-7 here Friday night in the Pearl River Tournament.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning,
Smith (West Ouachita HS) homered, driving in 2 runs. Then
Skains (West Ouachita HS) stepped up to bat, and she hit a home run and gave LSUE a 3-2 lead. Now it was
Bishop's (Newton County HS) turn. And she launched one over the fence as well, pushing the Lady Bengals lead to 4-2. And the magic had started.
LSUE extended their lead out to 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning when
Lakyn Wales (Zachary HS) drove in
Jeannemarie Angelle (Cecilia HS), and Smith's hit allowed
Maleah Saucedo (Orangefield HS) to score.
Calhoun (11-1) had a big fifth inning, scoring four runs on five hits to tie the game at 6-6 and would take a one-run lead in the sixth inning after errors by the Lady Bengals allowed a runner to score.
Hannah Vidallier's (North Vermillion HS) hit allowed
Sierra Gasca (West Ouachita HS) to score and when
Abigail Mondy (Lafayette HS) stole second,
Mima Doucet (Notre Dame HS) scored on the throw. The Lady Bengals held on to win.
Doucet finished the night 2-for-3 and two runs scored. Smith was 1-for-4 with a run scored and 3 RBIs.
Molly Wilson (Castor HS) got her third win of the season on the mound for LSUE, and
Savanna Cates (Hargrave HS) earned a save.
The NJCAA topped ranked Landy Bengals improved to 12-1 on the season.
