CLINTON, MISS. -- Mima Doucet's two-run single in the sixth inning saved the day for the LSU Eunice Lady Bengals and kept them in the running for their fifth national title. Doucet's hit gave LSUE a 3-2 win over Des Moines Area Community College.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, DMAC (47-8) walked
Emily Henderson (North Desoto HS), and then
Jeannemarie Angelle (Cecilia HS) singled on a bunt advancing Henderson to second base.
Haley Godeaux (Cecilia HS) hit a single out to right field, but Henderson was caught at home plate by the Des Moines catcher.
Facing two outs with two runners on base,
Mima Doucet (Notre Dame HS) singled on a line drive to left field, and both Angelle and Godeaux scored.
With the 3-2 lead, Head Coach Andy Lee sent in
Abigail Leonards (Iota HS) to close out the game on the mound for the Lady Bengals. She threw 24 pitches and struck out two batters to earn the save.
Elizabeth Fontenot (Port Barre HS) earned the win, pitching six innings and striking out two. She threw 95 pitches.
Doucet was 1-for-3 with the two RBIs. Angelle finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, while
Rebecca Skains (West Ouachita HS) was 1-for-2 with one run scored and one RBI.
Skains hit a homerun in the bottom of the fifth inning to close to within one run of the lead. That home run was Skain's 12th of the season and her 37th with the Lady Bengals.
The Lady Bengals advance to play Johnson County (35-5) at noon Friday. LSUE is now 50-11 on the year.
